First 2000 Years, The
The First 2000 Years by W. Cleon Skousen introduces a new treatment of an old and most important subject. Some of the perplexing questions raised in the Old Testament are answered for all time by the authoritative use of ancient and modern scripture. Some of these questions have persisted throughout the ages: Why did the Lord give Adam and Eve two seemingly contradictory commandments? Where did Cain get his wife? Why did the Lord ask Abraham to sacrifice his beloved son Isaac? What was the reason for the longevity of the early people? How did the priesthood continue on the earth during the two thousand years? What significance does the City of Enoch have for present day Church members? These are only samples of questions that have been answered in a definitive way by the author.
The First 2000 Years partakes of two outstanding characteristics: (1) it is a book that students will wish to ponder and read again and again; and (2) it is a book that the casual reader will lay down after the first reading with satisfaction and understanding and a glorious confidence in God's eternal plan for man on earth.

Obituary for Alice Helen Gardner
Obituary for Alice Helen Gardner
The Late Mrs. Hubert Mills
It was with regret that this community learned of the passing on Feb. 22, 1962, in Palmerston Hospital, of a highly respected citizen, Mrs. Hubert Mills, Drayton, aged 74. Sincere sympathy goes out to Mr. Mills and relatives in their sad loss. The late Mrs. Mills was the type of Christian woman who inspired deep respect from all who knew her.
She was a native of Aberdeen, Scotland, where she was born October 22, 1887, being the former Alice Gardiner. She came to Canada about 1910 and first resided at Bronte. In 1910 she was united in marriage to Mr. Hubert Mills in Toronto. For some years they resided at Barrie. In 1954 they moved to Drayton and later lived in Guelph for three years before returning here. Three brothers and a sister predeceased her in Scotland. She was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church, where the funeral was held on Saturday, February 24, with the minister Rev. Alexander Clements officiating. Favourite hymns of the deceased, 'Unto the Hills' and 'Rock of Ages' were sung, with Mrs. Floyd Besse organist. Interment was in Victoria Cemetery Chapel with pallbearer being three nephews, Messrs. Ted Mills of King City; Hubert Mills of Chatham, and Kenneth Cumberland of Niagara Falls and Messrs. Donald Smith Grant Goodwin, Drayton and John Fedorjeuso, Guelph.
Flowerbearers were Messrs. Horace Tardif and Mervin Walker.
The lovely floral tributes were as follows: Husband; Stanley and Nancy Mills Drayton; Hubert and Margaret Mills & family, Chatham; Ted and Florence Mills and family, King City; Gordon and Ethel Gray and family Portage La Prairie, Manitoba; Ken and Agnes Cumberland and family, of Niagara Falls; Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Hesselink and family, Drayton; Herb and Betty Mabee Drayton; John and Tina Fedorjeuso, Guelph; Leslie and Eva Maud and family, Santa Ana, California; Kathleen and Ted Tiller and girls, Santa Ana; Christ Church of England Ladies' Guild.

THE PASSING OF JOE MAUDE
"I Have Finished My Work"
"Poultry" Office displayed a subdued and solemn atmosphere on Thursday afternoon (March 28th) when the sad news was telephoned through by Mr. W. McGilvray from Goulburn that the judge of the poultry section at that day's agricultural show, Mr. J. Maude, had collapsed and died suddenly. Our thoughts were at once directed to the quiet, unassuming but effective part played by the late Mr. Maude, and the influential position that had been gained by him throughout the years by the almost uncanny knowledge that he possessed of the standard characters of most breeds of poultry, pigeons and dogs.
The sad happening occurred just as he had finished judging the poultry section of the Goulburn Agricultural Society's Show. Earlier in the day he had complained of a dull pain in the chest which he attributed to indigestion--but he clung to his task and on its completion in the afternoon remarked to Mr. Cecil R. Thompson: "I have finished my work, but am feeling very unwell and will take my judging book to the secretary's office." Leaving the pavilion--Mr. Maude collapsed, and a doctor was appealed for by the wireless in operation, also the ambulance. But it was of no avial--his work was indeed finished and with the momentary wide-opening of the eyes, they closed in death as his head fell to rest on his shoulder.
The funeral on Saturday last from the Undertakers' Parlors at Hurstville to the Woronora Cemetery showed the measure of esteem and regard in which our old friend was regarded by those interested in those sections of minor livestock of which Joe Maude's opinion was thought so much of. The many beautiful wreaths and the whole funeral cortege was impressive, whilst the numbers of both present-day and old-time fanciers who assembled at the graveside in the Church of England section of the cemetery evidenced the sincere regard in which "Old Joe" was held. Here and there one saw faces that had not been seen often of late years--but the crisis of his passing had made its call-and they were there.
Arriving in Sydney from Yorkshire, England, in 1883, Mr. Maude obtained a position on the N.S.W. Railways. We knew him first as as hunter at Darling Harbor; but a man with an intense liking for poultry and pigeons who had reported shows for English poultry journals and had close acquaintance with leading English breeders and exhibitors, was not destined to work for long in any other avenue. We read his show reports and comments in "Castner's Rural Australian" (edited by the Reverend Mr. Woodhouse) and the "Town and Country Journal" up to 1887. He then went to Victoria and in 1888 was secretary of the Melbourne Poultry and Kennel Society, remaining several years, and returned to Sydney as a breeder of high-class fowls and bantams, show judge and reporter.
He reared a family of six to adult age and lived very simply but nevertheless happily because always surrounded with those things he loved best. His good wife and now sorrowing widow was rich in her bountiful spirit of making Joe's friends welcome, and encouraging her husband in his pursuits; and both are widely renowned for their homeliness and hospitality.
The late Mr. Maude became associated with "Poultry" as a contributor in its very early days and since "Poultry" was first published has never reported for or contributed to any other paper. There were times when we wished he was not so severe in his comments and which brought us trouble, but Joe was a man who had to say what he thought, and if that was sometimes unpleasant, we had to remember he wrote so much that was approved, that the other was passed as being meant for the general good. The Australian fancy has lost a remarkable man from its circle. Such do not develop in every generation, and his loss reminds us all that there are too few men in Australia (although there are a few) capable of judging a whole poultry section of a show or of commendably reporting it for readers. Mr. Maude's age was 75 years.

Newspaper Article about Merle Snyder Foote
Newspaper Article about Merle Snyder Foote in the Deseret News, Thursday, November 29, 1984
91-year-old artist keeps her zest for life with an easel and brush always nearby
PROVO -- "I just have to."
That's the reason 91-year-old Merle Snyder Foote still paints, despite her poor vision.
"If I see a nice sunset or snow piled on a tree, I've just got to paint," she said. An easel stands at the ready in her northeast Provo home--"where I can get at it" in case something urgent comes up.
All 21 grandchildren and some of the great-grandchildren, 58 at last count, own paintings by Mrs. Foote. They choose the subject, but, Mrs. Foote said, "If it's something I don't care for, it takes a long, long time to finish."
Mrs. Foote especially enjoys painting landscapes and florals.
Several have won county and state fair awards. The Artists Section of the Provo Women's Club recently honored the artist with a showing of her works.
Mrs. Foote joined the art workshops in 1943 and learned water color techniques from Bessie Eastman Gourley in weekly classes. She used to do a lot of painting in that medium. But with diminishing eyesight, glaucoma, cataract surgery, and now loss of sight in one eye, watercolors are too difficult to see. Oils are easier to see and to scrape off when something needs to be changed, she said.
Mrs. Foote has been interested in drawing and painting for as long as she can remember. Born in Provo in 1893, she was often asked to draw illustrations on the chalkboard at Maeser School for special occasions. While attending BY High, now known as Academy Square, she was allowed to take college art classes in a building across the street, adjacent to the old Women's Gym. B.F. Larsen was one of her instructors.
Later, while attending Brigham Young University, Mrs. Foote created the winning cover design for the White and Blue magazine. The prize, a gold medal, is still a cherished possession.
Mrs. Foote took her skills back into the classroom after graduation from college, teaching two years in Moroni, Sanpete County, and one at Provo's Parker School before her marriage to T. Earl Foote.
They moved to the area of Provo then known as Pleasant View, where Mrs. Foote still lives. They had four children. "There was little time for painting in those days," she said. Her husband, a school teacher and farmer, died in 1966.
Mrs. Foote has seen many changes in Provo. "When we moved to this house, I knew nearly everyone in the area," she said. "Now everything's been subdivided, and there are a lot of strangers."
Many other changes have been chronicled in a 285-page volume she published in 1973, at age 80.
"A lot of people give up when they get older," she observed. "I'm slow and awkward, but I try to keep busy." And she does--not just with painting, although a week seldom goes by without her sitting down at the easel.
For 20 years, Mrs. Foote has served as historian of the Pleasant View Chapter of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, "because no one else would do it." She regularly clips newspaper articles about people she's known and keeps them in a scrapbook.
She continues to bake bread, a skill she learned as the oldest of nine children. She is the only one of her siblings still living.
Sundays are family days, when children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren come by to visit and share a meal of her hot stew or cold salads and ice cream--depending on the season.
And, once a month, she attends the artists meetings at the women's club, as she has for 41 years. In spite of what others say about Mrs. Foote's talent and zest for life she remains modest and a bit embarrassed by the publicity.
"I'm not a great artist," she insists. "I just enjoy doing it."

Obituary for Lowell Marsden Durham, Jr.
Obituary for Lowell Marsden Durham, Jr. from the Deseret News, Wednesday, 1 October 1997, Page B6.
Lowell Marsden Durham, Jr., 54, died on Sept. 29, 1997 in Salt Lake City of complications from multiple myeloma.
Lowell was born on September 3, 1943 in Iowa City, Iowa to Lowell Marsden Durham and Betty Divers Durham. He married Linda Farr on August 2, 1962 and they have seven children. Lowell received Bachelor's and Master's degrees in English from the University of Utah, and a Doctor of Philosophy in English Literature from the University of Washington. Lowell pursued many professional opportunities, succeeding at each. He was an associate editor of the New Era, and worked for many years at Deseret Book, eventually serving as President. He spent the next seven years at ZCMI, ultimately as president. Most recently, he started Technigraphics, Inc., and worked as the Director of the Obert C. and Grace A. Tanner Center for the Humanities at the University of Utah.
An active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Lowell's influence was felt by many as he served as a teacher, bishop, high councilor, and a counselor in a stake presidency. He was an exceptional speaker and teacher who had a gift for teaching important principles in memorable and sensitive ways.
Lowell was an accomplished writer, editor, and poet, and a gifted academician. He was also a successful buisnessman, a respected community leader, and a talented athlete. He had quick wit and a sharp sense of humor. He was, however, most proud of his family and his children: Matthew (Mary-Margaret Pingree), Christopher (Jena), Michael (Jennifer), Amy, Lindsay (Troy Denning), Daniel, and Leslie. Dan is currently serving a mission in the Argentina Rosario Mission.
Lowell is survived by his wife and their children, his mother, Betty D. Durham, his sister, Susan (John T.) Nielsen, his brother Thomas (Becky) Durham, and his four granchildren.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Friday, October 3, 1997 at the Olympus Stake Center, 2675 East 4430 South. Friends may call at the Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 South Highland Drive on Thursday from 6-8:30 p.m. and at the Olympus Stake Center from 10:30-11:45 a.m.
The Durham family wishes to give special thanks to Dr. Saundra Buys and to Lowell's brother and bone marrow donor, Tom.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Lowell M. Durham Fellowship at the Obert C. and Grace A. Tanner Center for the Humanities at the University of Utah.

Eleanor of Aquitaine and the Four Kings
Eleanor of Aquitaine and the Four Kings, originally copyrighted in1950.
This account of Queen Eleanor and her century is offered as a study of individuals who set their stamp upon the events of their time, rather than as a study of developing systems of politics, economics, or jurisprudence. While it is hoped that it is conformable to what is known of institutions, it explores a different area, using many materials that the historian of institutions must perforce, for reasons of brevity and clarity, leave aside, yet which are a part of the tradition that is history in a wide sense.
The materials used are in general "contemporary" sources (those of the twelfth century, expanded by a decade or two at either end), and they include chronicles, biographies, literature--secular and ecclesiastic--epistles, and commentaries, in which the reader may see brought together in one account what the century says about itself. Occasionally incidents about the century recorded in later eras, but not found in the documents of the time, are included as tradition. I am, of course, greatly indebted to secondary sources, particularly for guidance to primary materials. Students who have worked with primarysources know that these records vary greatly in trustworthiness; it is beyond the scope of this book, however, to offer even a summary of the considerable critical work that has been done about twelfth-century writings. Suffice it to say that in that early period large borrowings without acknowledgment were common; some chroniclers were tempted, through the influence of patronage, self-interest, egotism, rancor, to select or distort facts; others were able, through favorable location or employment, to have firsthand knowledge of what they report, and scholarly evaluation has judged these latter writers generally reliable.
In the use of primary materials considerable effort has been made to discriminate between probably hearsay and probably fact, between gossip and authentic report, and frequent reference is made to sources so that the curious reader may set forth at any point upon critical excursions of his own. As much inference is required in a study of this kind as in a study of selected aspects of the time, but where inference is required to bridge gaps in the sources or to explain situations, it is indicated, with the sources on which it is based.
The twelfth century affords especially rich materials for such study. Persons representing important aspects of experience flourished in numbers--Capets and Plantagenets, Becket, Saint Bernard, Abélard, troubadour poets, Guillaume le Maréchal, Héloïse--to cite a varied few. The time is marked by many stirrings--the intellectual revolt, the turn from Romanesque to Gothic, the impulse to crusade, the struggle between church and state, the rise of vernacluar literature, and others. The urban culture of the great cities is distinctive.
Queen Eleanor knew all the personages; she was concerned with all the movements, to many of which she contributed notably; and she knew every city from London and Paris to Byzantium, Jerusalem, Rome, besides all those of her own provinces in western Europe. Her story, which runs through the last three quarters of the century, provides a "plot" almost as compact as that of a novel, for she was the center of the feud between the Capets and the Plantagenets that agitated the whole period and culminated in the collapse of the Angevin empire. Without historical distoration or any attempt to fictionize, her history brings the diverse elements together and into relation.
From the Preface.

E-mail message from Connie Maude to Leslie Derek Maude concerning Violet Cottrell's death received 12 January 1998.
Just thought I would pass on some information from grandpa. He called to say that Aunt Vi passed away Sunday. The funeral will be Wednesday at 2:30 in St. George, at the same place Uncle Reed's was with the burial in Parowan.
Their son Reed, Jr. called grandpa and asked him to get in touch with his brothers, so I told grandpa I would e-mail Eldon and Gordon. I hope their addresses are the same as they gave last February when they were here for grandpa's birthday.
Not much else going on here. love to you, mother

Obituary for Hazel Gertrude Mortensen Haynie
Obituary for Hazel Gertrude Mortensen Haynie, Deseret News, Wed. 8 April 1998, p. B4
Hazel Gertrude Mortensen Haynie
A truly noble lady, Hazel Gertrude Mortensen Haynie, age 100, passed from this sphere of eternal life to the next, in Orem, Utah, on Palm Sunday, April 5, 1998 at 6:04 p.m. She had lived for the past 16 years on Provo, UT.
She was born on a Sunday, January 9, 1898 in Eastdale, CO, to Lars and Sarah Vilate Decker Mortensen. There were five daughters and three sons in their family. She was married to Leonard M. Haynie in the Salt Lake Temple, on October 4, 1916. He preceded her in death 25 years ago, on April 11, 1973.
Hazel was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She is survived by two daughters, Larue (Ted) Elliott, of Sidney, NY; Louise (Russell) Johnson, of Provo, UT; son, Delph V. (Marianna) Haynie, of Durango, CO. Another son, Elwood M. and his wife, Frances Haynie, formerly of Colorado Springs, CO, preceded her in death. She has 11 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Hazel was a remarkable lady, and unique by today's standards. She made a career of being a devoted, full time wife and mother to her husband and children. She also served in most every capacity in the auxiliaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in her ward and stake, and was still serving as a visiting teacher at 95 years of age. She was on her way to the Provo Temple when she was accidentally knocked down and received a broken hip, which required two major surgeries from which she never completely recovered. She also served in many capacitites in the community where she lived in Alamosa, CO.
Hazel's nobility and remarkable qualities came from her eternal perspective and sincere desire to be anxiously engaged in the service of others as long as she lived. She fully appreciated the purpose of life and understood and loved her life's mission. Hers was a life of willing and supportive service. She was especially loved and admired by younger people, whom she dearly loved.
Funeral services will be held Friday, April 10, 1998 at 11 a.m. at the Oakhills 6th Ward (Hillside Chapel), 1900 North 1500 East, Provo. Friends may call from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service at the ward chapel. (Take 2300 North to the mouth of Rock Canyon, turn right up the hill for one long block and turn left one block).
Interment will take place in Hazel's beloved San Luis Valley, CO, at the Manassa Cemetery, where graveside services will be held on Tuesday, April 14, 1998 at 2 p.m. Services are under the direction of Berg Mortuary of Provo.
Hazel has asked that in lieu of flowers, any donation may be made to the LDS Church Missionary Fund, or a favorite charity.

Hi, we have had a very busy week-end with Uncle Ray, Uncle John, Aunt Linda, Joyce, Trevor, Tina and Tom and Justin and most of the time grandpa and grandma.
We had the sealing of Indy on Saturday in San Diego. Marie Nesbit did make it and it was nice to see her. After the sealing we went to Lisa's for a meal then we five came home. Uncle John and family stayed at Lisa's Sat. night so they would be there for the blessing on Sunday.
The troup came back Sunday night (it was quiet here) but Tina, etc. stayed down there. They wanted to go to Sea World on Monday.
We had a nice visit with Uncle Ray and he and Uncle John got to visit and it was more relaxed and there were not children to distract them from visiting. We took Uncle Ray to the airport Monday afternoon and I came back and got supper for the 8 of us here. Lanny was off somewhere.
Well, I better let you get back to work. I got a message from Heather this morning that their phones have been out because of the weather and they had tornado warnings.
Love, mom
